FQA (Frequently Questioned Answers)

What is LoongArch?

LoongArch is a modern 64-bit RISC instruction set architecture developed by Loongson. It is designed for desktops, servers, embedded systems, and high-performance computing, with growing support across the Linux ecosystem.

Why choose a LoongArch system?

LoongArch offers an alternative computing platform for users who value open-source software, Linux, software development, education, research, and exploring computing beyond traditional x86 systems.

Is LoongArch just a modified version of MIPS?

No. LoongArch was influenced by MIPS, but it is its own instruction set architecture.

This question often comes up because Wikipedia says LoongArch has “been referred to as a fork of MIPS64r6.” That sentence is reporting what some people have said, not stating it as an established fact.

Having written LoongArch assembly ourselves, we can say there are similarities to MIPS. That is not surprising given Loongson’s history with MIPS processors. There are also similarities to RISC-V and PowerPC. Like most RISC architectures, they share many common design principles.

LoongArch has its own instruction encoding, ABI, privilege architecture, SIMD extensions (LSX and LASX), calling conventions, relocation model, and software ecosystem. Linux, GCC, LLVM, binutils, glibc, musl, and other major development tools all support it as a distinct architecture.

The short answer is that LoongArch was influenced by MIPS, but it is not simply MIPS under a different name.

Why choose LoongArch instead of x86, ARM, or RISC-V?

LoongArch offers a modern desktop-class Linux computing experience on an architecture outside the traditional x86 ecosystem. Whether you're a developer, researcher, Linux enthusiast, or simply interested in exploring new platforms, LoongArch provides a capable and practical alternative.

We believe processor diversity matters. As software becomes increasingly concentrated on a small number of architectures, platforms like LoongArch encourage portable software, broader platform support, and a more resilient computing ecosystem.

Unlike many alternative architecture platforms that require board-specific operating system images, custom boot procedures, or manual device tree configuration, the LoongArch desktop systems we offer provide a familiar UEFI-based experience. Installing and managing Linux feels much like it does on a traditional PC.

Rather than being limited to an experimental development board, you'll have a complete desktop platform suitable for software development, virtualization, productivity, home labs, and everyday Linux use.

Many consumer-available RISC-V systems today are still oriented toward embedded applications or development boards. LoongArch offers a mature desktop computing experience with modern multi-core processors available today.

Is LoongArch practical for everyday use?

Yes. Modern LoongArch systems are complete desktop and workstation computers, not just development boards or proof-of-concept hardware.

The latest Loongson processors deliver performance suitable for software development, web browsing, office productivity, virtualization, media playback, and general Linux workloads. Performance is competitive with many mainstream desktop processors, making these systems practical for daily use rather than simply experimentation.

Whether you're writing software, managing servers, editing documents, or building a home lab, LoongArch provides a capable Linux experience with modern multi-core processors, standard UEFI firmware, and broad support across today's open source ecosystem.

If your workflow depends on Windows, another platform may be a better fit. For Linux users, developers, researchers, educators, and enthusiasts looking for an alternative architecture, LoongArch is ready for everyday use.

Which operating systems are supported?

Our systems are designed for Linux. Support varies by model, but common distributions include AOSC OS, Loongnix, Debian, Arch Linux, Slackware, and other community-supported distributions.

See this Loongfans page for a more exhaustive list of supported operating systems.

Will my software run?

Many open-source applications are already available for LoongArch. Software that is open source can often be compiled natively. Proprietary applications and software available only for x86 may not be compatible.

Through the use of box64, many x86 applications can be ran on a LoongArch system. For example, it is possible to install Steam and play some AAA games through the usage of box64.

Can these systems run Windows?

No. These computers are intended for Linux and other operating systems that support the LoongArch architecture.

Who are these systems intended for?

LoongArch systems are ideal for developers, Linux enthusiasts, educators, researchers, home lab users, and organizations interested in modern non-x86 computing platforms.

Are the systems upgradeable?

Upgrade options vary by model. Many desktop systems support standard memory and storage upgrades, as well as the installation of PCIe cards. Refer to the specifications on each product page for details.

Do you test systems before shipping?

Yes. Every system is inspected and tested prior to shipment to help ensure it arrives ready to use.

Do you ship internationally?

We do not ship internationally at this time.

Why purchase from Valor Computing Systems?

We provide tested hardware, English-language support, and a purchasing experience tailored to customers interested in the LoongArch ecosystem, making it easier to get started without dealing with the process of importing hardware from China.
